As we pivot into the new year, I think we can all feel a bit of cabin fever. Lucky for us, venues are starting to host music again, and bands are beginning to trickle back into the nightlife of our little town. One event that you will not want to miss is the Lat’In Go Party hosted by the up-and-coming new favorite venue Gutters Bowling Alley. We can look forward to DJs and local favorite Concepto Tambor gracing the humble stage at the local venue.
Concepto Tambor has been around for quite some time and has featured a wide variety of eclectic musicians from the USA and Latin America. The band leader, Christian Orillano, created the group hoping to lean on drums as a melodic through line to each set they created. If you have ever seen them live you can testify to the amazing percussion the band boasts as they enter each venue, carnival-style, with a parade of drums. The band can host anywhere between 7 and 13 band members at any given show and has been a stepping stone into the New Mexico nightlife scene for many musicians.
One of those musicians includes Argentina drummer, producer, and Taos local Ricky Carlini. I asked the percussionist how the winter has treated him as a local musician. “Winter is a challenging time for music.” He replied “I think that winter is [a] slowish time for music in general due to the short days [and] cold weather. I see a decent amount of bars [and] restaurants booking music, but not really fully equipped venues for larger music shows.”
He went on to shout out a number of small venues that have been keeping local musicians afloat during the slow season. “I value places like Sagebrush, Taos Inn, the old Montgomery (they just start booking again) Rolling Still, Ale House, The Alley, Gutters, stuff at the Revolt Gallery, Mountain view at Valdez, and other places that I’m sure I’m forgetting because they [have] been keeping live music alive. What I don’t see is a [large] venue to organize shows. Taos has many amazingly talented musicians and sometimes the offer of spaces can be limited.” With larger venues shutting down for the winter and the onslaught of big international bands coming to a complete halt, it is important now more than ever to come out to smaller local shows and support local musicians.
Concepto Tambor will be joined by local DJ and sound creature DJ Kanizzle. As an artist, I would consider Kanizzle less of a DJ and more of a sound painter. He creates most of his tracks from scratch and builds upon DIY-made sound bites to make tracks that are dissonant and chunky and different. This doesn't stop him from bringing the bass. You will be pleasantly surprised to be moving your feet and hips to a new unadulterated sound that will leave you both musically confused and refreshed. The show will also be featuring “new kid on the block” JoamJafel, an up-and-coming Peruvian DJ who will be spinning South American music with an EDM twist.
If you’d like to shake off this winter's cold and warm your bones to some Latin music, come to Gutters Saturday, January 21st. The show starts at 7 p.m. and costs $10 at the door.
