Taos Fiestas Queen

Taos Fiestas Queen Sheyenne Carleen Cecelia Torrez

After weeks of uncertainty over whether any Fiestas de Taos events would be held this year, Fiestas Council President Don Fransisco Trujillo II has confirmed that the traditional dance and mass will be returning this year, but other festivities will be postponed until next year.

"We booked the Sagebrush at the last minute - very lucky as it had actually been on hold for another event - and decided we would have the Gran Biale and our Fiestas Mass," he said.

The events will be held on Friday (July 23), with the mass at 5:30 p.m. and the dance at 7 p.m.

For over 40 consecutive years since 1981, the Taos Fiesta Council, Inc., a non-profit organization, has been contracted by the Town of Taos to coordinate, organize and manage the annual Fiestas de Taos and all related activities. This is only the fourth instance in over 100 years that the Fiestas have been cancelled. The others were in 1969 in which the archives note the reason as “Hippie Problems”, 1946 in which the reason is not recorded, and last year due to the pandemic.

The event was put on hold, in the hope that the Governor would open the State and the Archbishop the Catholic Churches to full capacity, which was made official July 1st. Unfortunately, due to the repercussions of the global pandemic: uncertainty, logistics, financial considerations and risk factors, along with insufficient time to organize effectively, a full Fiesta weekend is not possible for 2021; however, Trujillo assures us the Fiestas de Taos will return in 2022.

"And while this is the longest serving Royal Court in Fiestas history, going on three years, there are only three remaining: Reina Sheyenne Torrez, Princesa Kimberley Cortez and Princesa Alexia Trujillo.

Unfortunately, Moniqua Gonzales resigned her position as Princesa at the later part of 2019 and Princesa Marisa Griego no longer resides in Taos and tendered her resignation earlier this year in 2021," Trujillo told us.

The purchase of presale tickets for the Gran Baile de Las Fiestas will be available Thursday, July 8th through Thursday, July 22nd, at the front desk of the Hotel Don Fernando de Taos during regular business hours. Fiesta Council Members are pre-selling tickets also. For questions or additional information, you may e-mail fiestas@newmex.com.
