Opinion: Worried about homeless

Posted

I just read a frightening news story about the public health issues caused by street people in Los Angeles. We in Taos have many of the same problems on a smaller scale. There are homeless living in the bushes all over town. It is not safe for a woman to walk from her car to a store. We have panhandlers and worse in every major parking lot. Almost every homeless person has a dog. Dogs have fleas that can transmit diseases and most of those owners can't afford to inoculate or deflea their pets. The woods behind my house are full of garbage, refuse and excrement. There are nests under the trees where people hole up. I truly feel sorry for those folks, but I don't relish having to personally defend my home. Women disappearing, never to be heard from again, puts me on an extreme edge. I am a U.S. Marine Corps veteran but a senior citizen and I don't want to do what might have to be done to protect my home and family, but I will.
