A series of fires were reported Tuesday (Oct. 1) adjacent to Forest Road 559 above the El Rito Campground in the Carson National Forest, according to Forest Service officials.

The wildfires collectively are being referred to as the Maton Fire, according to a press release issued by the federal agency. The fires have burned about 50 acres in Ponderosa pine so far between 2-4 miles north of the community of El Rito, New Mexico. Officials said the cause of the fires is unknown and is currently under investigation.  Smoke from the Maton Fire is visible from  U.S. Highways 285 and 84, and the communities of Taos, El Rito, Medenales and Abiquiu.

Fire suppression has been assigned to a Type 3 organization.  Firefighters are at the scene and scouting for the best options to contain the fires.  About 45 total personnel are currently assigned to the Maton Fire. More resources have been ordered.

Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures. More information is available at the New Mexico Department of Health Environmental Public Health Tracking website at https://nmtracking.org/fire.
