Two Roads ...
Two roads diverged in our nation,
And sorry I could not find much unity or purpose
And being just one person, long I stood
And pondered our country's predicament as long as I could,
All the while wondering what the future would hold;
Then I chose the road I thought was right and just
Because of what I had been taught and what I believed;
Though for all that my hopes and dreams
Were really about coming together and not falling apart.
Many writers and leaders have promulgated similar ideas
In ways that mirror my own. And there are times I think
That someone else can walk the road of justice, that I'm too old.
Yet knowing how life leads us all in directions that nudge us away
From commitments and causes, I sometimes doubt
If real change will come through elections and referendums.
I write these words with frustration and an ongoing sigh.
Sometime in the generations to come when they look back on this time, will they say -"It was all before them,
Two roads diverged, and they, they followed the signs
Of care and compassion - and that has made all the difference."
