Two Questa seniors recognized for athleticism, excellence on the court

Passino and Spears named to All-District team, North-South squad

Two members of the 2017 Questa Lady Cat volleyball team received all-district honors at the end-of-the-season coaches’ meeting held in early November. Larissa Passino and Arianna Spears were chosen for their athletic contributions to a Questa team that earned a 12-8 overall record and went 6-2 in District 5-2A play. Passino and Spears have been active members of the Lady Cats varsity since they were freshmen in 2014. Each has played several positions, including opposite hitter, middle hitter, middle blocker, setter and defensive specialist. Collectively, the two have been a part of Questa volleyball teams that have gone 48-34 over four years, but 2017 was the only season in which the Lady Cats were invited to the state tournament.

Passino and Spears have also been selected to play in the North-South All-Star game for Class A-2A taking place June 7. The duo will join Makeely Garcia, Sarah Hurd and Rikki Rivas from the Escalante Lady Lobos as the only members from District 5-2A chosen to represent the north. Other players include Makenna Hittson from Des Moines; Melique Vinyard and Michaela Zamora from Magdalena; Elianna Blum and Branna Poole from Santa Fe Waldorf; and Sania DeHerrera and Katy Scott from Springer. The location of the game will be announced at a later date.

Both girls are multi-sport athletes. Passino currently plays for Coach Steve Rael and the Lady Cats basketball team. Spears is on the Questa cheer team and was on last year’s state championship team. The current Lady Cats volleyball team is under the guidance of head coach Michelle Spears, who just completed her third year.
