Tres Piedras area prescribed burn coming up

Posted

About 1,700 acres are likely to be treated with prescribed fire in the Tres Piedras area sometime between May 20 and June 15, as long as the weather conditions are favorable to burning.

The Tio Gordito burn area is located about five miles south of Tres Piedras and one mile west of U.S. 285.

Forest roads 578, 578A and 578G border the unit, according to the Carson National Forest. Fire managers plan to use ground ignition, rather than starting and spreading the fire with a plane.

"This unit is one of eight prescribed fire units comprising a larger project area totaling 16,997 acres located north, south and west of Tres Piedras. Most of these units will receive some form of mechanical treatment prior to being burned. Combined treatments will provide for a more fire resilient and fire adapted landscape to reduce the threat of high severity wildfire to nearby communities," read a press release.

Burning should take two to three days once the prescribed fire begins. Smoke will be visible from many communities in Taos County. To read more about how to protect your health during fire season, visit
