Opinion: Total recycling finances

Posted

Given my passion for recycling, I read with interest Jesse Moya's story "Reduce, Reuse … Recalculate?" (The Taos News, May 2).

The author mentions the Taos Recycling Center's annual revenues of $83,000 and expenses of $290,000. There is a passing reference to the fact that recycling saves landfill space. Landfill space is not free, and as such, any review of the recycling center's financial position should account for the foregone costs associated with the waste stream that is diverted. Although this may not close the budget gap, it would provide a more accurate picture of the center's financial situation.

Additionally, given that this is a county recycling center, I find it odd that the recycling fee is not assessed to all county residents, or at least those that live within a reasonable distance of the center. We live in Ranchos and would gladly pay the fee to keep the center operating.
