Tigers win season opener against Alamogordo

Scoring in transition, strong defense keys to victory for Taos

In his career debut, Coach Nando Chavez came charging out of the starting gate with an impressive win over the much larger Alamogordo Tigers at the 2017 Coach Henry Sanchez Basketball Tournament held in Bernalillo Nov. 24. This annual four-team tourney has been a staple for both the boys and girls basketball teams, and often represent the season opener for one or both squads from Taos.

This year, it was Tigers versus Tigers in the early boys game, with the northern variety cat squad grabbing the win, 61-53.

Scoring in transition and half-court situations were issues that plagued the Tigers last season, resulting in low scores and several losses (ultimately, Taos would forfeit all but one game in 2016-17 due to a personnel violation). However, the aggressive play by Taos and the relentless attack initiated by the guard trio of Quinn Moon, Justin Madrid and Abdul Khweis proved to be a marked difference in this year's makeup – including a 24-point output by Taos in the fourth quarter to stave off a comeback by Alamogordo.

Next, Taos will play in the feature game against the winner of the Bernalillo Spartans and the Bloomfield Bobcats Nov. 25. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
