Things to watch in 2019: Rethinking downtown

Posted

Strong at Heart and Taos MainStreet Accelerator have taken aim at downtown Taos to try and revitalize the area to what might fit the community best.

Strong at Heart, a yearlong community-wide discussion, brought residents together for events like walkability tests downtown to show where improvements may be needed to make the area safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. Organizers also solicited ideas from residents for the historic Taos Plaza and surrounding neighborhoods.

Taos MainStreet Accelerator is part of a nationwide MainStreet program to revitalize downtowns across the country. One of their first projects was to light the downtown area with luminarias for the Christmas season. Efforts have been set in motion to make downtown more attractive to both locals and visitors. This year could see some collaboration efforts between traditional and modern elements for the Taos MainStreet district.
