Opinion: Thanks to respectful state police

This is a letter of thanks that I never thought I would write. Having been on the receiving end of police abuse several times, I can speak with some authority as to the professionalism exhibited by the dozen or so officers from the New Mexico State Police during the four-day protest against the de-watering of Taos Valley this past spring. There were tough negotiations and a few tense moments but in every instance the officers on the scene acted respectfully and courteously. At Standing Rock, as with most protests across the country, we were faced with every kind of crowd control munitions that the police had in their militarized toolkit. Sadly, force and violence are the usual response in these situations but I must admit I was stunned at the professional and respectful way that they handled this unusual situation.

May we build on this cooperation and work together to make a better world.
