Colors: Orange, black

Coach: Nancy Call

District 2 teams: Desert Academy, Gallup, Los Alamos, Miyamura, Santa Fe Prep and St. Michael's.

There is only one class for swimming, so the teams in district are different than for other prep sports. It also means only one class swims at state: the only ways to qualify are to meet the qualifying time for an event or win first or second place at the District meet Feb. 9.

Thus, every event and every practice are preparation for the championship season, which includes the district and state meets. Coach Call says that her goals for the team are to "work hard at being the best student-athletes and swimmers that they can be. This one goal combined with working and encouraging each other at every practice and every meet" will make individual swimmers stronger and make the team united and strong.

Key Swimmers: The swim team is led by Seniors Ashley McMains and Hunter Griego. Coach Call reports that "Ashley has already come within .02 of a second of achieving the qualifying time in the 100 Backstroke for state." What's more, freshman Grace Goler qualified for state in the 100 Butterfly in the first meet of the season, held Saturday (Nov. 20) at Albuquerque Academy.

Tigers Swimming Roster:

Boys: Jesse Casias, sophomore; Lorenzo Cordova, eighth-grade; Diego Griego, junior; Hunter Griego, senior; Cooper Le-Deux, junior; Jordan Montoya, sophomore; Michael Pacheco, freshman; Estevan Salazar, freshman.

Girls: Kimberly Appa, sophomore; Aricela Chavez, eighth-grade; Angela Cortez, freshman; Grace Goler, freshman; Ashley McMains, junior; Maye Montoya, eighth-grade; Veronica Montaya, senior; Alyssa Murray, senior; Cielo Rodriguez, junior; Karen Rodriguez, sophomore; Daniela Solis, sophomore; Nina Yven, junior.

2018/2019 Outlook

With a broken heater in the Taos Youth and Family Center pool, the Tigers swim team hasn't had much time to practice before the start of the season. Nevertheless, they swam their first meet in Albuquerque and will continue to look for relay team combinations that maximize their chances to meet state qualifying times or place at the district swim meet.

The team will rely on eighth-grader Aricela Chavez and the other girls on the team to improve as the season progresses.

The team has a strong group of boys, including swimmers Diego Griego, Estevan Salazar, who swam on a relay team at state last year, and newcomer Lorenzo Cordova (eighth-grade). These three boys, together with Hunter Griego, earned second in the medley relay at the Academy meet in Albuquerque Saturday (Nov. 20). Coach Call expects vast improvements in the boys team throughout the season as well.
