The Taos Tigers are off and running with one meet, The Bernalillo Invite, already won for the girls and a second place for the boys.

Many athletes are still getting into racing shape, and the team didn't run several events for their first competition. Even while awaiting a full squad and finer weather more conducive to practicing outside, the Tigers have qualified three athletes for state. Faith Powell qualified in the high jump and the triple jump; Abigail Gunter in pole vault; and Jonah Vigil in long jump.

The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) redistricting has altered the 4A scene significantly for the Taos Tigers. The boys, after winning five consecutive state championships, and the girls, who won in 2013, 2014 and 2018, have new competition. It "changed the dynamics of what we have to do," reports head coach Benny Mitchell, regarding new competitors.

"All in all it's going to be an interesting and fun" season, said Mitchell. "We're not going to shy away from them."
