Owners Delta Bayer, Patrick Trujillo and Eliza Collins recently opened Taos Spice Merchants at 226-B Paseo del Pueblo Norte – next to Brodsky Bookshop and across from the historic Fechin Inn.
The idea came to Bayer and Trujillo, who are spouses, while they were on vacation back East, where they visited a local space emporium with an olive oil and vinegar store next door. They combined the two and Taos Spice Merchants was born.
For eight months, Bayer and her husband sourced the finest and freshest whole and organic spice from around the world, according to a statement from the company. They also sourced “traditionally harvested sustainable salts with certified provenances, organic certified extra-virgin olive oils from California and crisp, bold balsamic vinegars from Texas,” according to the statement.
Popular items so far have been the African and Indian curry selections; traditional North African tagine, baharat and ras el hanout; Middle Eastern blends, like dukkah; traditional French blends; a range of Spanish and Hungarian paprikas; beef, poultry, fish and wild game rubs; and a section of whole-pod ristra-style chiles from South America, the Mediterranean and the southeast portion of Asia.
