Taos racks up several points in finale, Spartans no match for moonlit Tigers

Taos scores seven touchdowns on senior night, playoffs await

Under a large, yellow moon, and in front of a sizeable crowd who gathered for the last home football game, the Taos Tigers shifted into overdrive and sprinted to the regular season finish line with a 48-6 rout of the Bernalillo Spartans  Nov. 3.

Taos jumped out to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter off a Jonathan Garcia rushing touchdown and Jude Suazo to Justin Good pass completion - and never looked back. Doubling the score in the second period, the Tigers went into halftime with a comfortable 28-0 lead. Another touchdown five minutes into the third period caused the clock to run as a measure of the "mercy rule."

Though the score did not ever widen to more than 50 points to warrant an early finish, the win for the Tigers was never in jeopardy. The seniors on the roster ended the game in victory formation and the Tigers evened their district season at 3-3. With a 7-3 overall record, Coach Art Abreu Jr. continues to improve his yearly output of wins - earning five wins in his inaugural season in 2015 and six wins last year.

The Tigers will now wait to see what benefits their two records will earn them in the post season. Brackets for class 4A (which will include 12 teams) will be made public on Sunday, Nov. 5.
