Taos needs a dog park

Thanks to Kurt Mayne for his letter, "Leash up loose dogs" (Oct. 31). He's right, of course, that people with dogs should obey park rules and use leashes. But this brings up an important issue - which is the lack of an off-leash dog park in our community. Taos recently initiated a long-term plan for our town, but sadly it failed to address the need for a dog park. A dedicated space for nonaggressive dogs to run and play off leash is greatly needed in Taos. Dogs that from an early age get to socialize with other dogs in such parks are far less likely to develop aggression.

Dog parks exist now in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and many other cities and smaller towns. Such a park here would benefit not only our own residents and their dogs but also tourists who travel with their animals.

The town and county should make a dog park a priority.
