Taos High School snow sports season off to a strong start

Posted

The Freeride Team of Taos Winter Sports Team has had an intense month of competitions.

They kicked off their season with the National Tour Stop in Snowbird, Utah, over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (Jan 19-21) where Andre Ortega, of Arroyo Hondo, finished seventh in a very competitive field, separated from first place by only 0.7 points. Rahul Williams finished 24th in Ski Male 12-14.

The weekend of Jan. 26-27, six athletes traveled to Telluride, Colorado, for their first Regional Tour stop. Charlotte Ulrich skied her line with great energy and style and took the top spot in Ski Female 15-18. Kayleigh Winters finished fifteenth. Megan Lewis competed in her first IFSA Freeride competition; the team got great skiing from her, but a couple of control issues placed her 20th. In Ski Male 12-14, Jack Dolan took fifth and Rahul Williams tied for seventh.

Arapahoe Basin (A-basin) in Summit County, Colorado, was next, with nine athletes representing Taos. Charlotte Ulrich snapped up yet another first-place finish, and Kayleigh Winters took third. Rahul Williams finished eighth and Andre Ortega tenth. Ellie Wirth of Santa Fe competed in her first ever IFSA competition. She skied her line beautifully but couldn't hold on to the run out after her last air.

With only a few days off, TWST Freeride got to compete on their home turf Feb. 7-10.

Twelve TWST athletes represented the team in the Taos Regional Tour stop on Thursday (Feb. 7) in Taos Ski Valley's West Basin. In Ski Male 12-14, Andre Ortega claimed a fourth-place finish, Ari Kolman of El Prado finished 14th, Jack Dolan 16th, Rahul Williams 18th, Elliot Molz 19th and Ridley Tidmore 24th. In Ski Female 15-18, Megan Lewis finished eighth and Kayleigh Winters 10th.

The following day, Friday (Feb. 8), the national tour stop began in Taos Ski Valley with qualifying day for all snowboarders and younger male and female skiers. Seven TWST athletes competed. Andre Ortega and Rahul Williams both qualified for finals. Saturday (Feb. 9) was qualifying day for older skiers, male and female. Charlotte Ulrich had the winning run and qualified in first place for finals which were held on Sunday (Feb. 10). A little bobble in Ulrich's final run pushed her down to a second-place final finish, with Mikayla Willis of Altabird Freeride taking the top spot by 0.3 points. Andre Ortega had the sixth best run of the day and moved up to a 10th-place finish, while and Rahul Williams moved up to 13th.

TWST Freeride will continue training through a break in competitions until the national tour stop in Crested Butte, Colorado, at the beginning of March.

"This gives us some time to focus back on training and working on where we are lacking," said Freeride Head Coach Andrea Krejci in a statement. "We are very happy with the results thus far and the camaraderie within the team this year is absolutely fantastic! Everyone is so supportive of one another. We have athletes who love to ski, and it shows!"
