The Taos County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a Hernandez man who was found shot on the side of Highway 75 south of Picuris Pueblo Friday (March 8).

According to a press release from Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe on Tuesday (March 12), deputies found 29-year-old Dorian Chavez struggling to breathe last Friday on the side of the highway that connects Dixon, Picuris and Peñasco.

Medics arrived at the scene and transported Chavez to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, where the 29-year-old later died.

Deputies later learned that Chavez "had other injuries consistent with a fight or some sort of struggle" and are investigating the death as suspicious with help from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
