Tyler Valencia capped an outstanding wrestling season with a victory in the championship match in the 132-pound division at the New Mexico state tournament in Rio Rancho Feb. 17 to finish 45-8 on the season. The team co-captain and district champ in his respective division pinned all three of his opponents in the lead-up rounds before defeating Irven De la Torre from Cobre by major decision (11-1) in the championship match. His 27 individual points helped boost the Tigers as a team, earning a third place trophy and ending a 29-year podium drought.
