Taos boys take the tourney, with third place for the Peñasco girls

Even with some of the roster still busy winning the state football championship, the Tigers basketball team controlled the Boys Taos Invitational Tournament, claiming the trophy on Saturday night (Dec. 1) with its 58-34 cleanup of Roswell-Goddard in the second half of the game. Though it was 21-19 going into halftime, the Tigers pulled away in the second quarter, dominating the court.

To get to the final, the Tigers first had to beat their 5A visitors from Deming on Friday (Nov. 30) 54-41after a definitive 74-15 win against Questa Thursday (Nov. 29) to kick off the event.

The currently undefeated Tigers made it to the quarterfinal round of the state tournament last year, where they visited Moriarty and came out on the wrong side of the 48-42 scoreboard. This year might be different. Head Coach Nando Chavez says their goal is "to get better every day."

Coach Chavez's plan to work on defense seems to be working so far. Between their three games, they allowed an average of only 30 points per game while scoring an average of 62 for themselves. It was a great start to the 2018-2019 Taos Basketball season.

Peñasco Girls

The Peñasco girls, state hopefuls, put on an excellent showing at the Taos Invitational Tournament, playing exclusively against bigger schools. Thursday (Nov. 29) they won over Wingate 68-37, which put them face-to-face with 5A Deming -- who went on to win the tournament. The Peñasco players refused to be intimidated and played an excellent game on Friday (Nov. 30) that was much closer than the score (61-40) reflects. They went on to play Taos Saturday (Dec. 1) for third place and won 49-25.

Teams in the Boys Taos Invitational Tournament: Deming, Dexter, Peñasco, Questa, Roswell-Goddard, Ruidoso, Taos, Wingate.

Teams in the Girls Taos Invitational Tournament: Coronado, Deming, Dexter, Peñasco, Questa, St. Michael's,Taos, Wingate.
