Talpa trailer fire under investigation

Posted

A fire that burned a double-wide trailer in Talpa to the ground early Thursday morning (June 27) is now under investigation by the New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Eddie Joe Abeyta, interim fire chief at Taos Volunteer Fire Department, said no one was inside the trailer when it burned on a hillside just off Maestas Road in Talpa.

He said firefighters were unsure of the cause of the fire and did not say what evidence had prompted the state investigation.

Abeyta said the report of the fire came into his department around 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Firefighters driving tankers through the narrow dirt back roads of Talpa struggled to reach the trailer, which was located up a small hillside.

“The bigger trucks couldn’t get in there,” Abeyta said.

Firefighters had to “hike” to reach the burning structure, he said, which was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived.

Firefighters from Río Fernando Fire Department also arrived on the scene to assist in controlling the blaze.

They used a fire hydrant that was located nearby on Maestas Road to douse the flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
