Support trio in 'Paws for the Cause Walkathon' to benefit feline shelter

Taos Feral Feline Friends is hosting the 13th annual "Paws for the Cause Walkathon." Tackling the grueling 27-mile walk will be veterinarian Dr. Kim Sides of the Salazar Road Veterinary Clinic; Mish Rosete, the youngest recipient of the prestigious Taos Unsung Hero award; and Ben Mitchell, returning for his 13th walk. Animal lovers can make a pledge for one or more walkers by calling (575) 737-9208 or visiting

The "Paws For The Cause" reception, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, from noon-4 p.m., is a free party for all of Taos to meet and greet the weary walkers. The party takes place at the Bent Masonic Lodge, 124 Camino de Santiago, near St. James Episcopal Church, in Taos. There will be a homemade lunch and dessert buffet, live music and a silent auction of more than 100 items featuring art, jewelry, fashionable gifts and gift certificates from leading Taos galleries, stores and restaurants.

This year's musical entertainment features hometown favorites. Brothers Johnny and Billy Archuleta are teaming up in a rare dual performance to play their spicy mix of rock and roll and traditional Northern New Mexican ballads.

Leanne Mitchell, president of Taos Feral Feline Friends, emphasized, "Everybody is invited to enjoy the free food and fun. The party features a complete lunch buffet of tasty snacks, salads and sandwiches, followed by homemade desserts. Our silent auction is a great way for bargain hunters to get a head start on their holiday shopping."

Mitchell concluded by saying, "If you support animal welfare or simply love cats, please call today and make a pledge for one or all of our stalwart walkers. 'Paws for the Cause' is our charity's only fundraiser, so your support is absolutely essential to keeping our shelter open and providing free spay/neuter and vaccinations to our community. The pledge hotline is (575) 737-9208."

Taos Feral Feline Friends is an all-volunteer charity saving the lives of homeless cats since 2004. It operates the only shelter in Northern New Mexico that rescues and relocates feral cats and is the top provider of free spay/neuter for cats in Taos County. Donations are tax deductible.
