State police investigate alleged Peñasco child molester

James Brown, 43, of Peñasco, was arrested Oct. 3 and charged with multiple counts of molesting a minor.

The Río Arriba County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation, but recently requested that New Mexico State Police take over the case.

According to a state police press release Wednesday (Oct. 4), Brown has been charged with three counts of criminal sexual penetration in the first degree, kidnapping and assault with intent to commit a violent felony.

Evidence obtained during the investigation indicates that Brown had allegedly sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl “at least [30] different times since March 2016,” according to the press release.

Brown was booked in the Taos County Adult Detention Center this month.

State police are continuing to investigate the allegations.
