Staff makes the difference

This past holiday period was one that recorded peak visitation throughout most parts of Northern New Mexico, boosting our economy for all. With bountiful snow and a revitalized offering, we witnessed scores of visitors touting best-trip-ever experiences. None of this could have been possible without our incomparable staff.

Our team is diverse and brings an array of skills to the mountain. This staff of more than 850 range from students from South America to Taoseños with more than 40 years of experience working at Taos Ski Valley. It is an incredible mix of talents and knowledge.

Fostering those talents and taking care of our staff is paramount to our success. And with that in mind, we have made a series of changes and improvements to our staff benefits program that we believe will improve the quality of life for our staff, and thereby our community. They include:

• Adding more workforce facilities to provide affordable and convenient housing to some of our seasonal staff. We now have 75 beds available for staff.

• Moving our minimum wage from $10/hour to the MIT Living Wage for Taos County of $11.20/hour. This is 54 percent above the federal minimum wage and 24 percent above the new state of New Mexico minimum wage.

• An Employee Assistance Program that allows our staff and their families free and confidential access to assistance including child and adult care, parenting, education, mental health, financial, legal and career help.

• Expansion of the Staff Shuttle program, allowing us to decrease the number of cars on the road, and helping those without reliable transportation to get to and from work.

• Making our 401K program even more inclusive, now allowing all staff employed for just one month or longer to contribute to it.

We're heartened that our priority and investment in our staff is receiving outside recognition, too. We were recently awarded the New Mexico Family Friendly Platinum Business Award for our living wage, pay equity and volunteer pay policies that help employees be successful at work and at home. We were the recipient of the 2019 Silver SHIFT Award from the CLOSE IT Summit and the Society of Human Resource Management for innovative solutions that impact individuals and communities in profound ways.

Finally, we participated in Gallagher's 2019 Benefits Strategy and Benchmarking Survey, which provides data and insights to recognize an organization's strengths, identify opportunities and achieve better outcomes. We are very proud to receive "Best of the Best" scoring of over 4,000 companies and the only ski resort to receive this highest honor.

We realize that it is our staff that really makes the Taos experience special for our guests. If we take care of our staff, we feel confident that they will in turn take care of our guests. Today, our goal is to build upon this mindset and care for our people in as many ways as we can.
