High school biking

The Taos Composite High School Mountain Bike Team begins its fourth season of offering Northern New Mexico students the opportunity to train as a team and race mountain bikes. This team is open to anyone who rides bikes, enjoys being outside and is in high school in Northern New Mexico.

Practices take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons as well as group rides Sundays. The team competes in the Colorado league with five regular-season races during the fall season. Athletes are encouraged to join this inclusive team that promotes camaraderie and fun while developing bike handling skills, healthy competitiveness, fitness and, most important, a healthy, active lifestyle. For more information, go to fitatos.org and email info@fitaos.org.

Fly-fishing lessons

Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort and Solitary Angler are offering casting instruction classes every Saturday, May 26-Sept. 1 during the summer season. Taught by certified fly-fishing instructors from Solitary Angler, these hands-on lessons cover the fundamentals, including how the fly rod, reel and line work together; the three elements to a good cast, how to cast overhand and backhand, even in the wind; and how to shoot line out and strip line in.

Lessons occur every Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-noon. This is a free program. However, a New Mexico fishing license is required and may be purchased at Sipapu's general store. Interested anglers are asked to meet at the Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort behind Sipapu's lodge on the patio.

Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment although doing so is not required. Fly rods and reels will be available at the clinics at no charge. Following the casting clinic, a more in-depth, half-day small stream fly-fishing class on the Río Pueblo will be offered for those who sign up for a fee. Reservations are required.
