The Taos Tigers Ice Hockey team came back from a couple weeks with no games and only one practice to go 3-1 in the Rio Grande High School Hockey League midseason tournament Jan. 4, 5 and 6 at the Amarillo Civic Center. The tournament doesn’t count toward regular season stats or standings. Instead, it is a way to bring together all nine teams that play in the league at one event.
That event was an endurance race for the Ice Tigers, who had only seven to nine skaters for each game. They played twice Friday (Jan. 4), beating Odessa 6-2 and Cibola 7-4. Saturday (Jan. 5), they won 6-3 against Durango, pitting against their rival, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers, for the semifinals. The Ice Tigers had 33 shots on goal to the Hilltoppers’ 30, but the final score of 7-3 Los Alamos reflected the relative fullness of the Hilltopper bench.
Seniors John Esquibel, Ysidro Gravelle and Leandro Richert and junior Lachlan Henderson were recognized as league All-Stars and Katie Pacheco picked up her first varsity point with an assist.
