Special Olympics skiing in Taos

Posted

Adding to your Special Olympics recognition article on June 13 ("Everyone is a champion in Special Olympics"), I would like the community to know we have alpine skiing also at Taos Ski Valley. As no skiing had been provided under New Mexico Special Olympics auspices for over 20 years, the Taos Winter Sports Team Adaptive Inclusion Program has fielded a Special Olympics affiliated race team for the past four years.

In addition to training at Taos Ski Valley, the group competes in regional events assisted by volunteer coaches. Longtime Taos Ski Valley instructor Peter Donahue directs the Adaptive programs and Kristi Vine is the new executive director for TWST. These also include Ski Club scholarships for special needs Taos County students and a Summer Disabled Sports Race Camp at Mount Hood in Oregon.

The Taos Winter Sports Team is a community supported nonprofit. Donahue can be contacted at edu@taoswintersportsteam.com and Vine at director@taoswintersportsteam.com. In our snow sports culture town, there is participation for everybody.
