The Taos Fire Department and the Taos Ski Valley Fire Department responded to a house fire Friday (April 28) at 130 Upper Twining Rd. while a morning snowstorm moved into the Taos Valley.
Responders from the Taos Fire Department, arrived at the call at approximately 7:30 a.m. following a mutual aid call from the Taos Ski Valley Fire Department and were joined by Hondo-Seco Fire Department and Taos County EMS.
One individual was in the residence at the time of the fire, but was able to evacuate before responders began work on putting out the flames.
As of 1 p.m., Taos Ski Valley Fire Department continued to work on the structure through the snow as snowfall in the mountains began to thicken.
The cause of the fire is believed to have originated from the chimney area, however Taos Ski Valley Fire Department Chief Mitch Daniels could not give an exact cause.
Regarding a possible chimney fire, Daniels recommends residents clean their chimney regularly to avoid any dangers.
"We're really glad that the resident sleeping inside woke up, got out and called 9-1-1," Daniels said.
According to Daniels, this is the largest structure fire the department has fought in five to six years.
