Sin Fronteras holds benefit art show to help refugees

Posted

Before their next trip to the border, local immigrant advocates Sin Fronteras will be collecting donations and displaying art from down south.

Une Noche Sin Fronteras will display artwork from the border and let the viewer catch a glimpse of some of the group's efforts on the United States border with Mexico. The event begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 6) at Vista Grande High School.

Sin Fronteras has been collecting donations and making trips to camps both in the United States and Mexico to drop off supplies for refugees stationed there.

"We're very happy to host them and we believe [immigrants] are our neighbors," said Vista Grande Director Isabelle St. Onge. "Schools are safe places for all our students."

The group will be asking for donations of new underwear and socks for adults and children, as well as various toiletry items for their next trip to the border. For this donation haul, other articles of clothing will not be accepted due to the fact that shelters have an abundance of outerwear.

"Every donation makes a difference in the work to protect the rights and well-being of our immigrant communities,' Sin Fronteras said in a press release. "We appreciate your kindness and love."

The group began their work in 2018 after camps of refugees seeking asylum were set up along the border. Since their initial trip in June of 2018, Sin Fronteras has helped several facilities and families along the border with donations from Taos County.

Sin Fronteras will be making a donation run to the border Nov. 8 and will be collecting donations during the art show. Cash donations for the venture will also be accepted.
