Taos Swim Club hosts Turkey Trot

On Nov. 23, the Saturday before Thanksgiving Day, the Taos Swim Club will host its eighth-annual Turkey Trot at the Taos Youth and Family Center. The race is a 5K run or walk course, and participants of all ages can compete in the event.

The race will start and end at the Taos Youth and Family Center, 407 Paseo del Cañón East, and, along the way, will travel west past the roundabout, then past the hospital on Weimer Road and will follow a trail that parallels Paseo del Cañón.

Right now for early registration, which runs through Nov. 16, the fee to participate is just $25. But after that date and through race day, the registration fee will be bumped up to $35. For children up to the age of 12, the fee is $10. Contact taostigersharks@gmail.com.

Try hockey for free

Taos Youth Hockey will be holding an event to "try hockey for free" on Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Taos Youth and Family Center. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring their own equipment since there will be a limited amount provided by the organization.

Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly. Wear either sweatpants or snow pants, gloves (they don't need to be hockey gloves), a helmet (bike helmet or hockey helmet - some will also be available for rent) and a hockey stick. Skates will be provided.

For more information on this event, go to taoshockey.com/tryhockeyforfree.

Day of the Tread goes down in Albuquerque

Day of the Tread, a popular themed biking event in Albuquerque, will be holding its annual ride on Sunday (Oct. 27) at Civic Plaza. Riders can choose from a multitude of trails, including some that range from a half-mile race for kids up to a 100-mile trail for those who want to "go to some of the most scenic places in the Albuquerque metro area."

The event is a play on Day of the Dead, so expect some good costumes.

Food, drinks and apparel will all be available at the event. Depending on the race a person or team chooses, prices can range from $45 all the way up to $100. To register for the event, head over to dayofthetread.com.
