Los Lunas wins Class 4A boys soccer state championship

Los Lunas, the No. 4 seed in the Class 4A state soccer tournament, added a state championship to its resume after defeating No. 2 Los Alamos, 2-1, on Nov. 8.

The Los Lunas Tigers lost only three games during the regular season and had a bye in the first round of the state tournament, before handling No. 5 Chaparral a 3-0 loss in the quarterfinals.

That led to a semifinals match between No. 1 Albuquerque Academy and the Tigers, with the latter taking home a close 2-1 victory. That win sent Los Lunas to a championship game against the Hilltoppers.

It was Los Lunas' first soccer title since 1983, when the team competed in Class 3A.

The No. 6 Taos Tigers finished with a record of 15-4-1 before falling in the quarterfinals to No. 3 St. Pius X. by a score of 3-0.

Texico takes Class 2A volleyball title

No. 1 Texico clawed its way back to a victory on Saturday (Nov. 16) in the Class 2A state championship match against No. 5 Mescalero Apache.

Down two sets to one, Texico fought hard and took the fourth and fifth sets to capture its sixth-straight state championship and 13th since 2001, according to The Eastern New Mexico News.

The Wolverines defeated Mescalero Apache earlier in the tournament, too, winning that match in a 3-0 sweep.

Texico put together a 19-6 record over the course of 2019.

For Peñasco, who also competed in Class 2A, a final record of 17-9 and a run to the quarterfinals was the furthest any team has made it under head coach Maxine Abeyta.

St. Pius X takes Class 4A girls soccer title

The No. 1 St. Pius X girls soccer team played Nov. 8 like they were the best team in the Class 4A soccer championships. On their way to winning a title, the Lady Sartans knocked out No. 8 Silver 5-0 in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Aztec 2-1 in the semifinals. Then, in the championship game, St. Pius X defeated No. 3 Albuquerque Academy, 2-1.

Meanwhile, the Taos girls soccer team entered the tournament as the No. 9 team and lost in the first round, 4-2, to Silver on Nov. 2, which effectively ended their season. The Lady Tigers finished off their season with a final record of 11-6-2.

Class 4A football now in semifinals of state playoffs

Just four teams remain in the Class 4A state playoffs battle. On Saturday (Nov. 23), No. 4 Grants will travel to No. 1 Bloomfield, while No. 2 Portales will travel to No. 3 Lovington.

The Taos Tigers, who entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed, were eliminated in the first round at the hands of No. 10 Silver on Nov. 9. The Tigers finished with a record of 6-5.
