Taos boys soccer loses to St. Pius X at state tourney

Posted

After reeling off an important win over Valley in the first round of the state soccer tournament, the Tigers traveled to face St. Pius X in Bernalillo on Wednesday (Nov. 6).

It was a team that Taos had seen for the first time this season.

In the end, the Tigers were shut out 3-0 by the Sartans, who then advanced to the semifinals before falling to Los Alamos.

For the Sartans, Marcus Garcia, Ethan Johnson and Heber Rios all scored a goal.

On the Tigers side, Milo Collignon had 12 saves during the game -- though that proved not enough as Taos couldn't get its offense going.

St. Pius X scored just one goal in the first half but added two more in the second half to make their lead more comfortable.

The Sartans then fell to the Hilltoppers the day after beating Taos. Los Alamos then made it into the championship game against Los Lunas but lost 2-1 -- making the Los Lunas Tigers the Class 4A state champions.

Taos volleyball's season over

The Taos volleyball season came to an end early on in the District 2-4A tournament last week.

On Monday (Nov. 4) the Lady Tigers lost in straight sets to Española Valley -- a team they had lost to a week prior in their regular season finale.

The loss effectively ended Taos' season -- and their hopes of making it to the district championship match.

The loss was the Lady Tigers' 11th straight.

Questa volleyball's season ends

The Questa Lady Wildcats are done for the season.

Questa, like Taos, lost in straight sets in the opening match of their district tournament -- but to Mora, a team they had lost to a match before that on Nov. 1.

Neither the first set nor the second was particularly close between the two teams, but Questa made it interesting in the third and final set as they forced Mora to win by two points, 27-25.

However, the match still resulted in a loss for the Lady Wildcats - and now their season is over.
