Landfill board to release rate study

Regular meeting canceled

Posted

The Taos Regional Landfill Board has canceled its regular meeting Thursday (Feb. 20) due to a personal emergency for a member of the group tasked with completing a rate study for the recycling center.

The study is focused on the financial viability of the center after the board acquired it from the town of Taos in 2019. Officials at the town of Taos were requesting financial assistance to operate the center, which continued to lose the town money.

According to board chair Russell Church, the future operations of the recycling center are dependent on this study.

The meeting will be rescheduled at another time and Church said a special meeting would be needed to discuss the study. A date will be announced later, according to Church.

Recycling at the center has been costing the town thousands of dollars as the price for operations far exceeds the income generated by selling the products.

The board cut glass and plastic recycling at the center when it took over the operations in order to save money from the materials that cost more to process than they bring in. The recycling center currently only takes cardboard, aluminum, paper and tin.

There was no other item on the agenda for the board to discuss so Church canceled the meeting entirely.
