The Questa volleyball squad had its moments on Tuesday evening (Oct. 1) when it faced undefeated Coronado in district play at home.
But moments only mean so much in a match against an undefeated opponent, as Coronado used a string of consistent moves in its setups to topple Questa in straight sets.
The Lady Wildcats now fall to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in 2A district play, while Coronado keeps its undefeated season going at 10-0 and 1-0 in district play.
Not once throughout the match did Questa necessarily look outmatched by the Lady Leopards, but key mistakes such as defensive placements and communication were the kryptonite for this squad on Tuesday.
"Lack of communication between the team itself on where to cover, because [Coronado] was really strong with setting up in lots of directions," head coach Diane León said. "So it wasn't ever the same."
In the first set, Coronado got out to an early 3-0 lead over the Lady Wildcats due to consistent setups and strong attacks, but Questa was always able to keep it close. No matter how close, though, Coronado was a step ahead. The Lady Leopards proved to have better setups and pulled through with a 25-20 victory in the first set.
In the second set, Coronado again got out to an early lead--a 4-0 lead this time--before Questa began to play to its potential. It was clear that the Lady Wildcats were stumped by the consistency of Coronado's setups. But again, Questa was able to find its groove and began to play better as the set went on. Down by five points in the second set, Questa rallied back to within one, 19-20. Coronado, after a few words from its coach to the players, came back stronger. The Lady Leopards would edge out Questa, 25-22.
The third set is when Questa gave Coronado its best looks. Every time the Lady Leopards scored, Questa would trail closely behind. But this time it was different. This time, Questa had its chances at winning the set.
Three different times--as they hadn't before in previous sets--Questa was able to secure a lead. The Lady Wildcats' most important lead came when they went up 21-20 over Coronado late in the set.
But Coronado's discipline would overshadow that, and they outscored Questa 5-1 in the final moments of the final set to secure a 25-22 victory, and sweep Questa in straight sets.
Both Coronado and Questa will see each other one more time this regular season--an away match Oct. 17 for the Lady Wildcats this go-around--and León now has an idea of how her team can improve in the future.
"Communication, team chemistry, belief in one another and keeping their heads up," León said.
Up next for Questa will be an Oct. 7 matchup at home against Escalante.
