The village council in Questa delayed a Tuesday (May 7) vote over whether or not the administrator should keep his job.
The vote was on the agenda for the Tuesday meeting, but Questa Mayor Mark Gallegos, who initially put the administrator on paid leave pending a vote by the village council, was not at the meeting.
The council voted 4 to 0 to remove the item from the agenda.
Nicholas Maestas has been the Questa village administrator since August. 2017. Maestas, who hasn't been to work since at least April 23, was at the Tuesday meeting.
"Point of clarification," Maestas said immediately following the vote, as councilors were moving on to a review of the budget. "What does that mean for tomorrow?" he asked.
Questa Village Councilor Louise Gallegos said that the item would be tabled until a future meeting. Maestas is still on paid leave.
During an interview last week, Mayor Gallegos cited issues with "morale" in the administrative office, but did not elaborate about what specifically led to his decision to put Maestas on leave and ask the council for his termination. The village of Questa employs 35 people.
The council could vote to keep Maestas in his job; the governing body voted that way about two years ago when Gallegos moved to terminate the previous administrator, Loretta Trujillo, who later resigned.
