Opinion: What are your options in Health Insurance?

Posted

As a benefit navigation program coordinator at Holy Cross Medical Center, I am very passionate about ensuring that the people in my community know their options when it comes to health insurance. I know better than most how confusing it can be to navigate through Medicaid, Medicare and other government programs. In my job, I serve as a resource to help people explore their options for coverage so that they do not end up with large medical bills that they cannot pay.

Many people in Taos and Northern New Mexico do not qualify for government health coverage benefits like Medicaid and because of that, I recently became certified as an enrollment counselor for beWellnm, the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange. What I've learned in this role is that there are still a lot of people in our community who don't have health insurance and are unaware of the beWellnm plan benefits. I'm on a mission to change that.

There is no good reason that anyone should go without health insurance, no matter the circumstances. Anyone who remains uninsured risks financial calamity and lack of care if they become sick or injured. Having insurance also offers access to preventative care, emergency services, prescriptions and more. Many individuals and families in Northern New Mexico can qualify for subsidies that help to pay the monthly premiums, and the only place to access those subsidies is through beWellnm.

The open enrollment period, which is just a short window of time to sign up, is coming up on us fast. There are navigators, like me, and insurance agents and brokers all around the state that can help you get prepared. There's even a chance that you could qualify to become immediately enrolled depending on your individual circumstances.

The website, beWellnm.com, also serves as a great resource, but becoming insured can sometimes be complicated and daunting, especially if you're not sure which program you qualify for. The help from people like me is free. Let us help you. Call me at (575) 751-8939 to schedule an appointment today. You and your family's health are too important not to protect.
