Primary wins: Ortez, Kennelly, Blankenhorn, Rael-Montoya, Vigil, Brush

After an arduous wait for anxious candidates, the primary results are in for  Taos County.  Overall, women were the winners in local races, signaling a major change for county decision makers. Political newcomer Kristina Ortez beat out veteran local politician Mark Gallegos for a chance at the House District 42 seat; she'll face Republican and Red River mayor Linda Calhoun in November.  Melissa Kennelly, who was behind Steven Romero until absentee ballots were tallied, will retain her position as Eighth Judicial District judge for division two in Raton.  AnJannette Brush defeated three contenders for a spot on the Taos County Commission representing District 4 while Darlene Vigil beat two opponents to take the commission seat for District 3.  Sara Blankenhorn will retain her position as Taos Magistrate judge.

Taos County chief deputy clerk Valerie Rael-Montoya trailed her opponent, deputy clerk Dolores Lujan, until the absentee ballots were counted and put her well ahead in the race for county clerk.

Eighth Judicial District Attorney Marcus Montoya was one of the few winning candidates who was ahead of his opponent, Paul Sanchez, even before the absentee ballots were tallied.

In almost every race, absentee ballots made the difference for the candidates, most of whom were in second place until those votes were totaled.

Elections staff finished tallying up more than 6,000 absentee ballots at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night (June 3).

Look for more on the races and the winners online Thursday (June 3).
