Coach Art Abreu Jr. named Citizen of the Year; eight others named Unsung Heroes in annual event

Hundreds filled the ballroom at El Monte Sagrado on Wednesday (Oct. 9) where Taos High School's head football coach Art Abreu Jr. was named the 2019 Citizen of the Year and eight other Unsung Heroes from the community were honored. 

The Unsung Heroes for 2019 are: 
Pastors and educators, Bennie and Edna Romero;
Art gallery owner Rob Nightingale;
Questa librarian Sharon Nicholson;
Taos historian and Mason, Dave Cordova;
Tiwa language teacher, Mary Alice Martinez;
Art historian, Virginia Couse Leavitt;
Taos High science teacher,  Julianna Matz; 
and Rio Fernando Volunteer Fire Department Chief Russ Driskell.

Taos Community Foundation, a sponsor of the event, also honored several people for their contributions to helping the community. Mountain Home Health care was honored as a top nonprofit.
