Kit Carson Park came alive with the tunes of country, folk, Americana and bluegrass Thursday through Saturday (Sept. 5-7) during Michael Hearne’s Big Barn Dance Music Festival.
Celebrating its 17th year, the three-day music festival treated two-steppers and music lovers with two dance floors under a large tent and back-to-back stellar musical performances. The Big Barn Dance stage hosted rising stars along with legendary songwriters – this year includ- ing performances by the Peterson Brothers, The Rifters, The Derailers, Gary P. Nunn and South by Southwest.
The event was marked by sadness at the outset by the news that one of its performers, Kylie Rae Harris, had been involved in a car crash that took her life and that of Taos High School student Maria Elena Cruz, 16, of San Cristobál. The festival issued a statement that read, “Big Barn Dance is devastat- ed and saddened by the loss of two beautiful souls that were taken from this world on Wednesday night [Sept. 4]. Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families. This tragedy is felt by the whole Taos community and the Barn Dance community. God bless and please keep Maria Cruz’s and Kylie Rae Harris’ families in your prayers.”
