The state's paving project along Paseo del Pueblo Sur reached the La Posta/Cervantes intersection in front of the Albertson's supermarket Saturday morning (July 27), inching north toward a point where it constricts from four-lanes to two.
Workers were observed getting their paving equipment ready early Saturday before traffic along the busy roadway increases as the day wears on.
During the process, the transportation department will shut down one lane of traffic at a time, requiring drivers to use extra caution as they proceed through the construction zones, according to a Taos News report by Jesse Moya. Work will continue through August as the main road is paved. Traffic control will remain in effect for the duration of the project.
Drivers are encouraged to keep an eye out for bicyclists during the construction, as bike lanes will be affected by the construction.
The state began the Paseo improvements in 2018 when the department rebuilt the sidewalks along Paseo del Pueblo Sur from Ranchos de Taos to Taos. Plans for the road improvement project have been in place for over three years as improvements continue, Moya reported.
Drivers are reminded to use caution and keep an eye out for construction workers on the road during the process. Alternate routes can be found along Salazar Road to the west and Gusdorf to the east.
