Opinion: Help provide laptops to every Taos student

Posted

Dear Community,

Today’s (March 27) announcement that New Mexico schools will not reopen this (academic) year means that our state’s 2 million students will be out of traditional classroom settings for at least the next four and a half months.

In response, True Kids 1 is working with Taos Municipal Schools, the Cudd Foundation and other community partners to ensure that all Taos students can access online learning. In coordination with Taos Municipal Schools, we have identified 200 households with middle and high school students in need of connection. Please join our effort to level the playing field by helping to provide laptops to these students. Providing access will empower our students to engage with classmates, teachers and mentors, and to benefit from online tools such as the Adobe Creative Cloud, which True Kids 1 can provide to Taos students at no cost. Digital connection can also prevent our most vulnerable students from falling drastically behind and provide a lifeline to students who may experience abuse or neglect at home.

This week, when asked to name the number one priority for her district, Taos Municipal Schools Superintendent Dr. Lillian Torrez said, “devices and internet for students.” With your help, we can move quickly to support our students’ success and well-being in this important moment. True Kids 1 is a Taos based educational nonprofit with a mission to provide New Mexico’s youth with media skills and opportunities to open career paths and promote digital citizenship.

We envision a community in which all youth have the digital connectivity, tools and skills they need to succeed. We hope that you will share this vision and join our effort to connect our students and support their success and well-being. Thank you for being part of the solution!

One hundred percent of the funding from this campaign will enable Taos Municipal Schools to purchase devices from Apple at an educational discount. Send a check to True Kids 1 PO Box 2301 Ranchos de Taos NM 87557 or donate online at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme2/truekids1

Rosey Hayett is Executive Director of the nonprofit True Kids 1 based in Taos.
