Opinion: Help Outreach Taos creates suicide prevention hotline

Dear Community Members,

Help Outreach Taos (H.O.T) has been formed to bring awareness to and help reduce and prevent suicides in the Taos community. We are in the process of creating a 24/7 phone hotline for use within our community.

In a collaborative effort, many organizations have been working with H.O.T to find solutions to the issues surrounding suicide. One key to reducing suicide is building connections within our community. This is where we hope we can count on you.

H.O.T is hosting an event on Aug. 19 at Kit Carson Park from noon - 6 p.m. called A Carnival for Life. This is part of our efforts to build connections while fostering awareness about suicide in Taos.

This event will include an audience participatory Labyrinth and dedication, live music, poetry and performance by youth, carnival games, food trucks, a car show, non-profit booths, art vendors, silent auction and a raffle.

We are looking for items such as gift certificates, jewelry, artwork, services, be it the healing arts or other, overnight stays, adventure activities and other wonderful items! H.O.T is welcoming your participation in order to support our efforts for this very important community issue. Suicide affects all of us and it will take all of us to change how we address suicide.

Please consider and donate what you can. All money made will be used for reduction, preventions and response efforts of suicide in Taos County. Donations are tax deductible as a special project under the Taos Community Foundation

Please contact Alan Wilkinson at alan-wilkins@hotmail.com or Risa Lehrer at info@helpoutreachtaos.com if you would like to make a donation.
