Opinion: Emergency room care needs to speed up


Not only is it ridiculous, but it is absolutely inexcusable – the horrendous hours of waiting to be seen by a doctor or a so-called “emergency medical technician at Holy Cross Hospital Emergency Services.

Although I have experienced agonizing hours of wait time at Holy Cross Hospital emergency room over the last several years – not forgetting the reason for being there in the first place, in pain, or sick enough to go there – but the last encounter was a record breaker. 

Although I was not a patient (this time), I was there with a friend who was one of the “lucky ones” because she was transported by ambulance. So for that reason alone, she was able to go directly into the ER right away. And even though we spent almost 9 hours there, she was at least able to get oxygen and an I.V. going. That at least made her comfortable during the time in which exams and tests were being done. 

But that was not the case for the people in the ER waiting room that were already waiting to be seen when we got there at 10 a.m. Most were still there in the waiting room when we were discharged at 6:45 p.m. Later that same night on Facebook, there were comments from the people who waited. “In pain” and “really sick” for over 11 hours. 

What does the word “emergency” mean to this hospital?

The reason that I am furious, as I am sure there are many that will stand behind me on this. It is because of their “reasoning” – a change in the system is what patients were being told that day. 

Whatever the reason, we’ve heard it all. There is no good excuse for keeping very sick people waiting to be helped in a so-called “emergency room.”

Definition of emergency = a serious, unexpected and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.

Whatever the problem is, fix it. Put your patients first.
