Ongoing Debates And Hot Topics

What event over the past year has been the biggest subject of conversation in Taos County and the Moreno Valley?

Oh, how we Taoseños love to talk. And gossip. And argue. And debate.

But the biggest topic of conversation in the last several months is — no shocker here — the election of a brash, Twitter-loving, billionaire businessman with no government experience to lead the United States as president. Donald Trump shocked the world, a lot of pollsters and maybe even himself when he won the presidency after taking the electoral college votes. His win set Taos all abuzz.

Tied for second place was debate over a four-story hotel and expansion of the Taos airport. A move by the town of Taos to create a hotel overlay zone in the south end of town, and then consider a height variance to allow a hotel up to 48-feet tall, split residents. Some support the hotel as a much needed enterprise to provide more places for visitors to stay. Others say such a building will set a precedent and ruin the town’s uniqueness. A project to extend the airport runway has caused similar divisions. It’s all part of “the ongoing debate on allowing new commercial development or keeping Taos ‘the same,'” wrote one voter.

Several people voted for the performance by Alabama Shakes, one of the biggest musical appearances to date in Taos.

Readers also mentioned immigration, drugs and a broken well that left Questa residents without water for three weeks. Suicides of youth at the Gorge bridge and the disappearance of long-time Taos Center for the Arts director Holly White also were among the hard topics people discussed a lot, according to readers.

Yes, there was the requisite mention of the Taos hum and chem trails, though one reader thought they might be “com or con trails in the sky.”

One person thought “$6 foot-longs at Subway” was worth a mention.
