They say winning isn't everything.
But, if done in a fair and balanced way, winning can be a healthy thing. After a stellar year at the helm of the Taos Tigers athletic department, Nickie McCarty has received a major thumbs up from the New Mexico Activities Association.
McCarty was selected as the Class 4A Athletic Director of the Year at the NMAA's annual Director's Cup Award ceremony in Albuquerque Oct. 1.
And though the parameters of the Director's Cup has a huge emphasis on winning: district and state team championships garner points towards its attainment, sportsmanship is a big determinant as well. So, an athletic program that has multiple team championships win a certain amount of points toward the winning of that year's cup. However, teams are penalized if respective coaches and players receive game ejections during games.
McCarty's teams did well in 2017-18 with several state championships and minimal infractions, placing third (tied with Robertson) behind Hope Christian (Albuquerque) and Silver High School.
Nonetheless, the longstanding Taos AD has many accomplishments and accolades to hang her hat on. A grateful community congratulates McCarty.
