Taos definitely has talent - and singers like 7-year-old Jasmine Monique Sandoval proved that this year.

Taos brought home the show at the 29th annual New Mexico Hispano Music Awards on Jan. 18 at the Ohkay Casino Resort Hotel in Española. Nine artists and bands from Taos brought home awards from this year's event, including Sandoval, who has been singing since kindergarten and won Children's Song of the Year.

"This was her first competition," said Nathaniel Sandoval, Jasmine's father.

Sandoval said that no stage is too big for Jasmine. She has also been an influence on her younger sister, who is also interested in music.

"I'm very blessed," Jasmine said about the award.

Jasmine is a student at Taos International School and is enrolled in the Spanish bilingual program at the school. According to school director Nadine Vigil, Jasmine is never shy about her singing voice.

"She speaks and sings and does everything in Spanish and English," Vigil said laughing. "She's just awesome."

Jasmine was enrolled in the after-school mariachi program at Taos International and continues to keep her voice in shape with mariachi and karaoke.

"She even does the little gritos in the songs," Vigil said.

Jasmine won her award for singing the traditional Spanish song "Los Laureles."

Taos singers and artists who also brought home awards include Ashley and Raquel Grant, Lluvia Negra, Norberto Martinez, Gabriella Salazar, Brian Garcia, Sarae Alise Tafoya Garcia and Anakaela Trujillo.

Each year the New Mexico Hispano Music Association holds its awards to determine the best New Mexico music artists in the state.

The association hopes to preserve the culture and tradition of New Mexico music through its efforts.
