New Mexico's top baby names - 2019

Olivia was the top girl's name and Liam was the favored boy's name in 2019 among New Mexicans.

The New Mexico Department of Health, which tracks birth records, put out its annual list of most popular baby names in mid-December.

Olivia is derived from the Latin meaning olive tree and signifies beauty, fruitfulness and dignity. In Old Norse it means "kind one." It was the name of the countess in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night."

The other most popular names of the year for girls were: Ava, Sophia, Isabella, Mia, Emma, Abigail, Sofia, Camila and Aria (we presume named after one of our favorite heroines in the popular series "Game of Thrones").

Liam is derived from Irish and means "resolute protection," and in some references means warrior or guardian. according to Nameberry.com. It was a shortened version of the original spelling of William, which was Uilliam.

Other boys names that topped the popularity list for New Mexico babies in 2019 included several biblical ones: Noah, Mateo, Elijah, Ezekiel, Sebastian, Daniel, Ezra, Logan and Isaiah.

In the prior five years, the most popular baby girl's name in New Mexico has been:

Isabella in 2018

Sophia in 2017

Mia was most popular three years in a row - 2016, 2015 and 2014.

Sophia and Olivia were second and third most popular.

Among names for baby boys, the most popular in the last five years has been:

Noah in 2018

Noah in 2017

Elijah in 2016 (Noah was second)

Noah in 2015

Liam in 2014 (Noah was second).

Across the United States, Emma and Liam top the list of most popular baby names. Olivia came in second for girls, according to Nameberry.com. Noah came in second for boys.

Around the world in 2019, Muhammad was the most popular boys name for the third consecutive year, followed by Noah. Olivia was favored as the top girls name, just as it was in New Mexico.
