Barrone sworn in

Mayor Dan Barrone took his official oath of office Saturday (Jan. 4) for the District 42 representative seat in the New Mexico Legislature.

After applying first for the District 6 Senate position, Barrone decided to put his name in the hat for representative after Roberto "Bobby" Gonzales vacated his seat to serve in the state Senate.

Barrone was chosen by the Taos County Board of Commissioners out of five applicants for the position after giving a presentation for the seat. During Barrone's presentation, he said cooperation was key to succeeding in the Legislature.

He will serve his term in the Legislature while still acting as the mayor for the town of Taos.

Barrone was selected by the commission with only one dissenting vote, from Commissioner Candyce O'Donnell. Barrone was joined by friends, family and community members for Saturday's swearing-in ceremony on Taos Plaza. He will officially take office when the Legislature starts on Jan. 21.

In order to retain his seat, Barrone will have to run in the June primary election.
