New Mexico increases coronavirus testing


More than 19,000 people have been tested for a new coronavirus that causes the deadly illness COVID-19 and New Mexico health officials announced Friday (April 3) that testing has been expanded.

According to the department, the following people may now qualify for COVID-19 testing: 

  • Asymptomatic people – those who aren't showing symptoms of the illness – who are close contacts or household members of New Mexico residents who have already tested positive for the coronavirus;
  • Asymptomatic residents in nursing homes;
  • Asymptomatic people in congregant settings such as homeless shelters, group homes, detention centers;
  • Symptomatic people displaying the COVID-19 symptoms of cough, fever or shortness of breath.

A tent triage area is set up outside of emergency department and offers on-site screening to determine whether you are eligible for testing.
