Missing man's vehicle found near Río Grande Gorge Bridge

Man not located after search

Posted

New Mexico State Police identified an abandoned vehicle belonging to missing Albuquerque man Ignacio Perez Jr. on Friday (May 18) at the Río Grande Gorge Bridge parking lot, but were unable to locate the man after an initial search.

Lt. Elizabeth Armijo, state police public information officer, confirmed on Wednesday (May 23) that the vehicle, a gray 2011 Toyota Tacoma, belongs to Perez Jr., 49.

The New Mexico Department of Public Safety listed Perez Jr. as a missing person May 10, describing him as 5 feet, 10 inches tall and about 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. His last known location was not included in the report.

Vendors at the west end of the bridge in Taos County first reported the abandoned vehicle to authorities May 16.

State police worked with Taos Search and Rescue to conduct an initial search last week. Searchers deployed a drone to scan the area around the bridge, but were unable to locate Perez Jr.

Due to extraordinarily low water levels in the Río Grande this year, a search of the river was not possible.

Armijo said the search has been suspended "due to lack of information."

The vehicle has been sealed, but may be searched at a later date as part of the ongoing investigation into the man's disappearance.

Perez Jr. is the second missing person to be connected to Taos County within two months.

Another abandoned vehicle, a silver 2001 Toyota Avalon belonging to missing California woman Krista Bowman, was found parked outside Cruz Alta Condominiums on April 26.

Last week's discovery is reminiscent of the disappearance of Holly White, the former office manager for the Taos Center for the Arts.

White's blue Ford Escape was found parked at the Río Grande Gorge Bridge parking lot on May 6, 2016. Searches for White around the gorge were similarly unsuccessful. More than two years later, she has still not been found.

Tips regarding Perez Jr.'s whereabouts, or that of any other missing person, should be directed to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety at 1-800-457-3463.
